FAQs

  1. Can I bring a non-knitting friend/partner/spouse?

All non-knitting partners/friends/etc. are welcomed. While this is a textile-focused tour, they will travel and be included in all of the activities and meals.

Though non-textile partners may not have the same experience with yarn and fiber that a maker might, we hope that the cultural experience will be inspirational.

2. What are the mobility expectations?

There will be some walking, mostly flat, as we explore parts of Lima, including the KINUA studio and various museums.

We will be taking a private bus between stops, so you must be able to ascend and descend the bus stairs.

Please note that Cusco's elevation is around 11,000 ft above sea level. The hotel will have supplemental oxygen to help acclimatize, but please plan accordingly.

Unfortunately, we can't accommodate wheelchairs or scooters on this trip.

3. How do I get to Lima, Peru?

While it depends on where you are coming from, it will take us 2 flights to get from Philadelphia to Lima. Once you arrive at the airport, your pre-arranged transport will take you to our hotel.

You can opt into arriving a day early to settle in. Just let us know and we can work with you to arrange it with the hotel!

4. Do I need to know Spanish?

We will have a bilingual guide with us as we travel.

5. Do I have to be an expert knitter?

We welcome makers at all skill levels. Our Peruvian Textile Tour is crafted to share the Andean textile experience through hands-on demonstrations, teachings from artisan-teachers, and visits to Peruvian cultural sites of historical significance.

6. What's the weather like?

It is the beginning of Fall in Lima, so the days are warm in the mid-70s F, with a touch of crisp cool in the evenings in the mid-60s F. In Cusco, expect the daytime high to be in the mid-60s F, with the nights on the chillier side in the mid-40s F.

7. I'm ready! How do I sign up?

Register for your spot here!

You will make a non-refundable $500 deposit per person at checkout. This deposit goes towards your trip cost.

KINUA, a natural dye studio + workshop

KINUA is a family-owned company located in Lima. The dye studio and workshop was born out of Maira’s (pictured here) love for natural fibers and dyeing. Together with her husband, Vince, they developed a textile lab where all KINUA yarns are designed and naturally dyed by hand.

We will spend time with Maira and Vince at their KINUA dye studio for a hands-on workshop learning about Peruvian natural fibers and dyestuffs, and also have a natural dyeing workshop!

Chinchero, a Traditional Textile Community

We will visit Chinchero, an city built on the remnants of what was once the palace of the Inka Tupac Yupanqui. This city is known for its dedication to traditional textile processes of dyeing, weaving, and sewing, which have been preserved over time, passing down from generation to generation.

Learn from Peruvian Artisans

We will connect directly with artisans who work with KINUA for hands-on textile experiences of Andean weaving techniques, hand-spinning using a traditional drop spindle (pushka), and natural dyeing.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel located high in the Andes Mountains of Peru. Built during the reign of the Inca emperor Pachacuti, it served as a royal estate and ceremonial center. The site is known for its sophisticated stone construction, agricultural terraces, and spiritual connection to the surrounding landscape.

Many weaving traditions originated in the Andes centuries before the Inca Empire and continue in Peru today. The same artistic principles seen in Inca architecture at Machu Picchu—precision, symmetry, and connection to nature—also appear in traditional Peruvian textiles, showing how art, culture, and daily life were deeply intertwined in the Andes.

We will spend a full day exploring Machu Picchu with a dedicated, bilingual tour guide.

Meet Maira and Vince, co-founders of KINUA

The KINUA Family

Maira and Vince are the co-founders of KINUA.

Maira, left, is pictured in Macusani, Peru (14,157 ft above sea level) holding a baby alpaca just 8 hours after birth. Maira is a true alpaca lover at heart, and has built KINUA around a deep respect for these extraordinary animals and the communities that care for them.

Vince, pictured on the right, works hand-in-hand with Maira to develop KINUA's luxury fiber yarn blends and natural dye color palettes. Here he is, collecting fresh ch'illca leaves, a native Andean plan traditionally used as a natural dyestuff. Vince also stands with the hand-spinning team - Fernanda, Raquel, Lucia, and Pancha- who are in charge of developing KINUA's handspun collections.

Though Vince and Maira work in their Lima-based dye studio + workshop, they have developed relationships with artisan partners across Peru. Together, they pool together their skills, craftsmanship, and experience to transform beautiful natural fiber blends into truly special naturally dyed yarns.
