Tukuwool’s journey began in 2014 as one person’s dream: to create a domestic, rustic, and honest yarn made from Finnish wool. In 2016, the yarn found a new home with Tiina Huhtaniemi, owner of the yarn shop Titityy in Jyväskylä. With Tiina’s vision, the shop’s expertise, and the support of an enthusiastic knitting community, Tukuwool started to grow roots — and bloom.

Under these hands, Tukuwool has evolved into something uniquely its own — deeply rooted in Finland, yet open to the world. Today, Tukuwool is close to the hearts of knitters everywhere.

Finnish Wool

Finnish wool is a beautiful, living, and unique material. It has developed in harsh conditions and carries the same qualities as the Finnish landscape and people: resilience, modesty, and quiet strength.

However, access to Finnish wool is not a given. While sheep are farmed across Finland, wool is not produced on an industrial scale. Collection, sorting, and processing require time, knowledge and dedication. Many farms focus primarily on grazing or meat production, leaving wool as a by-product. Much of it still goes unused, either because it isn’t gathered or because processing it isn’t economically viable.

Breeds such as the Finnish Landrace (suomenlammas) and Kainuu Grey (kainuunharmas) have survived with quiet determination, even when their wool was not highly valued and their populations were small. We know that their wool is more than material. It’s a piece of living heritage, a strand of spun history.

Using Finnish wool takes commitment: the supply is limited, acquiring it requires time, and processing it involves many hands. But that is also what makes it so special. Every yarn tells a story — not just about where it was grown, but why it was chosen. It carries character that cannot be replicated, and that’s why we choose to honor it.

Tukuwool Yarns

The wool we use is primarily from Finnish Landrace sheep, with some shades — namely the gray bases — containing rare Kainuu Grey wool. Both are native Finnish breeds with distinct qualities.

The shine of Finnish Landrace wool is exceptional, its curl is alive, and its texture is soft, almost silky. At its best, it rivals Merino in softness and shine while maintaining its Finnish character: honest, strong, and warm. The Kainuu Grey, on the other hand, adds loft, bounce, and a luminous, broad crimp. It felts easily, something often a valued feature in sweaters and accessories. Together, these two types of wool create yarn with a beautiful structure.
